Global energy markets are witnessing a state of anticipation as risks threatening oil and gas supply chains increase, driven by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Gulf and Red Sea regions, and coinciding with changes in U.S. energy policies. Markets are facing conflicting pressures between fears of physical supply disruptions and regulatory changes that may ease restrictions on Russian energy exports.
Geopolitical Tensions and Supply Security
Oil tankers have been subjected to attacks in Gulf waters, raising immediate concerns regarding the security of vital shipping lanes. In parallel, reports have monitored attempted targeting of oil infrastructure in the Red Sea, in addition to strikes targeting Russian oil terminals, which has enhanced the state of uncertainty in global markets and cast a shadow over price stability already suffering from fluctuation pressures.
U.S. Policies and Drilling Activity
On the regulatory side, the United States has taken measures related to suspending certain tariffs and restrictions on Russian energy imports under national interest exceptions. At the same time, drilling activity in the United States has maintained its stability, as a report by oil services companies recorded stability in the number of drilling rigs at the level of 603 rigs, with slight changes in the distribution of oil and gas rigs.
Market Analysis and Price Trends
In natural gas markets, mild weather continues to limit heating demand, offsetting the impact resulting from lower production levels compared to record figures registered earlier in the year. Technically, natural gas is trading around the levels of $3.08 per million British thermal units, amidst technical indicators pointing to challenges in surpassing resistance levels.
As for crude oil markets, West Texas Intermediate is trading near the level of $97 per barrel, as investors monitor technical support and resistance levels amidst indicators pointing to the consolidation of current momentum. In contrast, Brent crude is moving in a price range exceeding $107, with markets awaiting any price breakouts that may confirm the continuation of the upward trend or a decline in the event of failure to break key resistance levels.
