Gold prices fell during today's trading, amid growing concerns about inflation linked to rising oil prices, coinciding with investors awaiting the Federal Reserve's monetary policy meeting for clues on the path of interest rates in the United States.
Gold declines in spot and futures trading
Gold fell in spot transactions, while US gold futures for December delivery also declined. Financial market experts pointed out that rising geopolitical tensions in the region are exerting clear upward pressure on oil prices, which in turn has reflected on the performance of the precious metal at the start of the trading week.
Rising oil and inflationary pressures
Oil prices witnessed notable increases as Brent crude approached high levels, influenced by the geopolitical risk premium following recent developments and the targeting of energy facilities and other targets. The rise in energy prices usually reinforces expectations of continued inflationary pressures, which may push the US central bank to keep interest rates high for a longer period to curb the repercussions of inflation.
Despite gold's traditional role as a hedge against inflation, a high-interest-rate environment reduces its investment appeal by increasing the opportunity cost of holding the metal, which does not generate a direct return for investors.
Awaiting Fed decisions and performance of other metals
Recent statements by Federal Reserve officials contribute to shaping market expectations regarding the path of monetary policy, while traders closely monitor upcoming decisions and bank meetings. At the same time, the prices of other precious metals recorded mixed movements, including slight gains in silver and platinum, while palladium saw a decline during the session amid global market volatility.
