A research team has developed a new technical framework aimed at evaluating the fire protection performance of building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) facades, in a significant step to bridge the gap in systematic risk assessment for these sustainable technologies.

The research team was led by scientists from the University of Science and Technology of China, in collaboration with other academic and international entities, to conduct an in-depth study aimed at identifying key fire risk factors and prioritizing the prevention and containment of fire spread in BIPV facades integrated into architectural structures.

Lead researcher Yu Wang explained that the study relied on data-driven sensitivity analysis and expert-opinion-based weighting methods to identify the most prominent fire risk factors among sixteen indicators, including electrical conditions, environmental factors, module materials, and installation conditions.

Key Risk Indicators and Preventive Measures

The identified indicators included temperature differences, equipment aging, DC voltage levels, circuit contact resistance, as well as module glass characteristics and packaging materials. Advanced analyses revealed that DC current and voltage, along with equipment aging, contact resistance, and the fire resistance of packaging materials, consistently ranked at the forefront of influential risk factors.

The team noted that fire resilience analyses translated the most significant risks into practical mitigation measures covering aspects of ignition prevention, fire spread suppression, monitoring, maintenance, and emergency response, while prioritizing procedures such as rapid shutdown to limit electrical risks and protect modern buildings.
