U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, is conducting an official visit to India, which includes an anticipated meeting with the Chairman of Reliance Industries, Mukesh Ambani, in the city of Jamnagar, Gujarat, to discuss ways to enhance cooperation in the energy sector and increase reliance on Venezuelan oil supplies.
Discussions on Expanding Venezuelan Oil Refining
These meetings come within the framework of joint U.S.-Indian efforts to strengthen energy security and diversify supply sources. The U.S. official explained that Washington is discussing with Reliance the possibilities of enhancing its capabilities to process and refine heavy crude oil from Venezuela, noting that the company possesses prior experience and infrastructure that qualifies it to handle this type of oil efficiently as Venezuelan production grows.
India as a Global Refining Power
Rubio described India's refining sector as a major global power, affirming Washington's understanding of New Delhi's ongoing need to diversify its energy portfolio. He indicated that the shift in supply sources requires time, but India has achieved advanced and notable steps in this direction through flexible strategies that serve its energy security.
Field Tour and Economic Meetings
The U.S. official's visit to Jamnagar is scheduled to include a field tour of the Reliance refinery complex, in addition to a dinner banquet held at the Vantara center in the presence of Mukesh Ambani.
