A parliamentary committee in the United Kingdom has called on the government to accelerate the pace of reforms aimed at reducing energy bills for consumers and businesses, emphasizing that the success of the energy transition path depends fundamentally on reducing costs and ensuring affordability for citizens and the productive sector.

Reforming Electricity and Gas Pricing Mechanisms

A recent report issued by the Energy Security and Net Zero Scrutiny Committee indicated that the current marginal pricing mechanism, which causes gas prices to set electricity prices a significant percentage of the time, poses a burden on the markets. The committee's chairman, Bill Esterson, explained that the core of the transition lies in securing energy at reasonable costs away from unrealistic goals, urging the government to reconsider available options to limit the impact of gas on electricity prices disproportionately to its actual share in power generation.

Development and Infrastructure of Renewable Energy

The report recommended updating and upgrading currently existing wind energy and renewable energy projects to raise their efficiency and increase their production, rather than focusing exclusively on establishing new projects. It also highlighted the importance of power purchase agreements to support major companies and institutions, achieve price stability, and enhance reliance on clean local sources.

Addressing Additional Costs and Consumer Debts

The report touched upon non-commodity costs, such as transmission network fees and environmental charges, which now constitute the largest proportion of electricity bills. The report called for urgent reforms to deal with the increasing demand from future data centers and to redistribute policy costs fairly. It also addressed the issue of growing household energy bill debts, proposing to study utilizing the windfall profits of energy network companies to help alleviate the financial burdens on consumers.
