The French Interior Minister announced that the number of participants in the mass demonstrations witnessed across the country today, Saturday, reached approximately 550,000 demonstrators in various cities and provinces, including 110,000 participants in the capital Paris alone.

Expansion of protests across French cities

These figures reflect the widening scope of popular, labor, and student protests rejecting the deterioration of purchasing power and the rising cost of living. Republic Square in Paris witnessed clashes between security forces and groups of protesters, where police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse demonstrators and extinguish fires set by protesters in cars and restaurants, amidst intense security deployment.

In regional cities, tensions spread to include Lyon, Marseille, and Lille, where authorities recorded temporary storming of municipal headquarters and government offices, in addition to material damage to shops and public facilities, and a fire in a tourist office in the city of Lyon.

Security measures and arrests

The French Interior Ministry reported dozens of protest movements across the country, resulting in the arrest of at least 166 people against the backdrop of acts of violence and vandalism. These developments come at a time when social and economic pressures on the government of President Emmanuel Macron are increasing, coinciding with escalating student movements and the revival of the spirit of the "Yellow Vests" movement.

These events coincided with official pledges from the President and Prime Minister to resolutely tackle acts of chaos and vandalism and prosecute saboteurs judicially, while emphasizing the protection of the right to peaceful demonstration and enforcing the rule of law, amid an escalating alliance between labor unions and student sectors ahead of expected general strikes on the upcoming fifth of November.
