The Lebanese state is planning to implement a new package of renewable energy projects aimed at adding new generation capacities that enhance the national electricity grid and contribute to overcoming the crisis of continuous fluctuations in energy supplies. The announced government plans include the development of solar power plants with a total capacity of 800 megawatts, alongside the establishment of wind energy projects with a capacity of 440 megawatts, bringing the total targeted capacities to approximately 1,240 megawatts.

These steps come within the framework of the energy sector's endeavors in Lebanon to diversify electricity generation sources and rely on renewable natural resources available in the country, such as high solar radiation and suitable wind speeds in various geographical regions. Officials in the energy sector seek through these strategic plans to reduce dependence on imported and costly traditional fuel, which for many years constituted a heavy burden on the country's general budget and inflicted successive losses on the electricity sector.

The Importance of Renewable Energy Projects for Infrastructure

The addition of these large renewable capacities represents a potential qualitative leap for Lebanon's energy infrastructure sector, as it contributes to providing more stable and sustainable supplies for citizens and various productive sectors. The electrical grid in Lebanon has faced severe structural challenges for decades, making securing electricity for long hours daily a very difficult task, which has negatively affected economic, industrial, and service activities.

Solar and wind energy projects are expected, upon completion, to contribute to easing the financial pressure on the state, in addition to reducing carbon emissions associated with traditional energy production, which aligns with global trends toward clean energy transition and reducing the carbon footprint. These plans reflect the desire of concerned authorities to attract investments toward the renewable energy sector, as it is the most practical and fastest solution to secure a large part of the growing demand for electricity in the local Lebanese market.
