Egypt is adopting an ambitious strategy aimed at reducing carbon emissions in the oil and gas sector, as a pivotal part of the objectives of the National Climate Strategy 2050. The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources is working on implementing comprehensive green transition plans based on raising energy efficiency and expanding carbon capture and storage projects to reduce the environmental impacts of operational and industrial processes.

The Importance of Reducing Gas Flaring in Oil Fields

Reducing gas flaring in Egyptian fields is a fundamental pillar in the modern energy industry, as these initiatives aim to curb emissions in line with international commitments at the COP27 and COP28 climate conferences. This step contributes to combating climate change by controlling methane gas, which has a high global warming potential compared to carbon dioxide. Companies operating in this sector also seek to implement the World Bank's initiative to end routine gas flaring by 2030, which enhances the global ranking of Egyptian companies and supports the confidence of financial institutions, in addition to improving air quality around production areas, which positively reflects on the health of workers and local communities.

Technological Axes for Emission Reduction

The transition to environmentally friendly production operations requires an integrated system of technical upgrades. The state has begun implementing major projects to connect remote fields to the national gas grid, preventing gas waste through flaring and directing it for economic use. Advanced vapor and gas recovery units have also been installed in key fields in the Gulf of Suez and the Western Desert, where these units capture and compress gases to reintroduce them into the production cycle. Furthermore, digital solutions, artificial intelligence techniques, and thermal cameras have been integrated to monitor operations in real time, allowing engineering teams to intervene quickly to prevent leaks and minimize waste in its early stages.

Economic and Developmental Returns

The benefits of reducing gas flaring are not limited to the environmental aspect alone, but extend to achieving tangible economic gains. These operations provide additional gas supplies for power generation plants, reducing import burdens. These projects also contribute to attracting green investments and international funding on concessional terms, given their compliance with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) sustainability standards. This qualitative shift has created new job opportunities for Egyptian youth in the fields of energy efficiency and environmental technology, paving the way for declaring many Egyptian fields completely free of routine flaring before 2030.
