Egypt's energy budget faces growing financial challenges in light of the significant leaps in global oil prices, with the price per barrel reaching high levels of about $110, compared to about $75 in previous periods. This large difference in cost casts a heavy shadow on the cost of securing domestic needs for petroleum products and natural gas, placing decision-makers before a difficult equation that requires urgent measures to deal with the growing import bill and its potential impacts on various economic sectors.

Three scenarios for dealing with the price crisis

In this context, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced the development of three different scenarios to deal with the wave of global energy price hikes and their direct repercussions on the local economy. These government moves aim to ensure the sustainability of fuel supply for vital state sectors, and to mitigate the severity of price shocks on markets, amidst ongoing efforts to achieve a balance between financial and social requirements in providing energy to citizens and production activities.

Economic questions about gas sector targets

On the other hand, this situation has raised numerous questions among economic experts regarding the progress of announced plans and programs for the energy sector, as a key question has emerged about the fate of natural gas production targets and their hoped-for role in meeting local needs and easing the pressure on foreign currency resulting from imports. Analysts believe that enhancing local production rates remains a pivotal pillar for reducing exposure to violent fluctuations in international markets, amid anticipation of what the upcoming government steps will result in managing this vital file.
