The naval forces of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps reported that an oil tanker collided with a sea mine in the area south of the Strait of Hormuz. The statement explained that the incident occurred as a result of the ship attempting to cross an unauthorized route and violating the rules followed in the region.
Details of the incident and navigational violations
Reports indicated that the tanker had turned off all its GPS and navigation systems while moving, in an attempt to bypass the routes designated by Iran. The collision with the sea mine led to an explosion and caused a fire to break out inside the tanker's engine room.
Warnings against turning off navigation systems
The Revolutionary Guard's naval forces emphasized that any ships sailing in the Strait of Hormuz or the Arabian Gulf that turn off their navigation and identification systems will face firm and strict interventions. This comes in light of ongoing tensions, as Iran had previously announced the closure of the strait last July, confirming that it would target ships taking unauthorized routes.
