Dr. Mahmoud Esmat, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, revealed important details regarding loss rates in the Egyptian electricity system, explaining that the total loss rate in electricity distribution networks is about 16.7 percent, during his participation in the Egyptian Energy Path session as part of the Egypt Forum activities in the New Administrative Capital.

Details of Technical Losses and Infringements on Networks

The Minister of Electricity explained that technical losses in distribution networks amount to approximately 10 percent, while the remaining percentage, estimated at about 7 percent, is due to illegal infringements and electricity theft by some users. These figures reflect the scale of the challenges facing the electricity distribution sector and the necessity to firmly address these illegal practices that burden the national grid.

Ministry's Efforts in Technical and Legislative Improvements

Esmat confirmed that the ministry is implementing a comprehensive plan that includes precise technical improvements within the electricity distribution system, with the aim of reducing loss rates and increasing the efficiency of network performance and its various components. He pointed to serious efforts to enact new legislation and legal procedures that enhance discipline and curb electricity theft across the republic.

Losses Related to Generation and Transmission and Future Prospects

Regarding the technical losses resulting from electricity generation and its transmission through the unified grid lines, the Minister indicated that this percentage is about 4 percent. He stressed the continued implementation of technical and organizational measures to improve technical performance and address the causes of waste, ensuring maximum benefit from the produced capacities and securing the stability of electricity supply for various developmental and economic uses.
