The Sultanate of Oman is preparing to participate effectively in the proceedings of the 31st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP31), scheduled to be held in the Turkish city of Antalya from November 9 to 20 next. This participation comes within the framework of the Sultanate's ongoing commitment to international efforts aimed at addressing climate challenges, accelerating the transition towards clean energy, and achieving sustainable development goals within the "Oman 2040" vision.
Strategic orientations and national efforts
Through its presence in this global forum, the Sultanate of Oman seeks to showcase its national experience in the fields of environmental protection and the promotion of the green economy, coinciding with the remarkable progress it has achieved in global environmental indicators. The Environment Authority is working to mobilize national efforts by forming specialized working teams that include experts in the fields of negotiation, innovation, and logistical support, to ensure presenting a comprehensive picture of Omani initiatives in reducing carbon emissions and transitioning towards a circular economy.
Environmental achievements enhancing the Omani presence
Omani participation is based on a record of tangible achievements, as the Sultanate has made remarkable progress in the 2026 Global Environmental Performance Index, achieving the 49th rank internationally. The Sultanate also recorded globally leading results in six sub-indicators related to solid waste management, wastewater treatment, marine habitat protection, and the reduction of sulfur dioxide emissions. This has been reflected in expanding the scope of natural and marine reserves, developing recycling infrastructure, and proceeding with the "Blue Carbon" project, which aims to plant 100 million mangrove trees to enhance the capacity of ecosystems to absorb carbon emissions.
Looking towards net-zero
This participation emphasizes the Sultanate's steadfast approach in balancing natural resource protection and economic development, in its serious pursuit to achieve the goal of carbon net-zero by 2050. The COP31 conference is considered a vital platform to exchange expertise with participating countries, and discuss opportunities for international cooperation in the fields of climate financing and green manufacturing, to serve national interests and support global efforts to protect planet Earth.
