Cambodia has launched a three-year program with $4 million in funding, aimed at reducing the most dangerous greenhouse gases, targeting emissions from the agriculture, waste management, energy, and transport sectors, as part of the country's efforts to fulfill its climate commitments.

Goals of the Super Pollutant Reduction Program

The launch of the Super Pollutant Reduction Acceleration Program officially by the Ministry of Environment focuses primarily on methane, black carbon, and hydrofluorocarbons. Reducing these pollutants is expected to achieve benefits beyond merely slowing global warming, including improving air quality and reducing public health risks.

This program combines government efforts and international partners to translate climate policies into practical actions on the ground. The program was adopted during United Nations climate conferences, with its activities to be implemented with funding from the Climate and Clean Air Coalition.

Challenges in the Energy and Agriculture Sectors

Officials at the Ministry of Environment confirmed that the launch of this initiative represents an important milestone in the country's efforts to face global environmental challenges, noting that the step will enhance international recognition of Cambodia's role in combating climate pollution and accelerating the pace of emission reductions. Current challenges lie in turning pledges into measurable results across various sectors that impact the volume of emissions.

It is noteworthy that methane is emitted from multiple activities such as livestock farming, rice cultivation, decomposition of organic waste, and fossil fuel production sector operations. Black carbon is produced by incomplete combustion and contributes to air pollution and rising temperatures, while hydrofluorocarbons are potent greenhouse gases used extensively in cooling and air conditioning systems.

Implementing Climate Policies

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Environment explained that the program will help translate national climate policies into concrete actions, including nationally determined contributions and the long-term strategy to achieve carbon neutrality. Relevant authorities pointed to the importance of international cooperation in building the technical capacity needed to accurately monitor emissions and ensure real and tangible reductions over the years of the program.
