The city of Reading in Berks County witnessed the success of an annual conference organized by the organization "Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful," which brought together a selection of environmental leaders, volunteers, educators, and decision-makers from across the state. The two-day event focused on the theme of connecting nature, community, and justice, and reviewed innovative strategies for pollution prevention, community revitalization, urban forestry, environmental justice, and local resilience planning.

Innovative initiatives and enhancing green spaces

The conference included a range of inspiring events, where Keith Green from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society gave a presentation on how to collaborate with communities to transform public spaces and expand access to green areas, empowering residents with the necessary tools to care for their local environment. The event also witnessed active participation from youth ambassadors who offered new insights on how to engage future generations in protecting the environment and developing community work.

Competitions and support for environmental projects

In an effort to encourage innovation, the Secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection, Jessica Shirley, hosted a "Shark Tank"-style competition, where three organizations affiliated with the group presented ideas for developing communities. The "Keep Reading Beautiful" initiative won a $2,500 grant to support the "Black Walnut Legacy Initiative," a project aimed at preserving historic black walnut trees and replanting them in the city of Reading, combining environmental restoration with community education.

Honoring local sustainability efforts

The conference concluded by honoring Bethany Ayers, Sustainability Manager at Reading Public Works, with the "Community Pride Award" by Senator Judy Schwank, in recognition of her dedication to environmental stewardship through education, community engagement, and fieldwork. Shannon Reiter, the organization's Executive Director, emphasized that these discussions and connections will contribute to building cleaner, greener, and more resilient communities throughout Pennsylvania.
