The US administration intends to take urgent steps to lower high energy prices and cool the markets before the onset of winter, by releasing a part of the emergency heating oil reserve to address global supply disruption crises.

Mechanisms for releasing emergency reserves

In light of the continuous rise in fuel prices, US authorities have laid out a plan for the temporary release of about a third of the emergency reserve designated for heating oil. According to agreements concluded with beneficiary companies, these companies are required to return the received quantities of oil later with additional payments.

The US Department of Energy announced the allocation of up to 315,000 barrels of heating oil to serve the states of Maine, Massachusetts, and Connecticut, and set the deadline for delivery of these shipments in mid-November.

Energy market challenges and economic pressures

These government steps come at a time when markets are witnessing severe supply disruptions linked to conflicts in the Middle East, which pushed retail diesel prices in the US to record highs reaching $6.52 per gallon.

Despite these government measures, a number of analysts express doubts about the effectiveness of this step, pointing out that the volume of oil put on the markets may not be sufficient to make a tangible and radical impact on current price levels. In the same context, the government continues to assess the need to release additional quantities from the reserve if necessary, coinciding with mounting political and economic concerns as the midterm elections approach in early November.
