Natural gas prices in Europe recorded notable increases, surpassing the barrier of 91 euros per megawatt-hour, reaching their highest level since December 2022, amid growing concerns about their direct impacts on inflation rates in the eurozone and the cost of energy for businesses and consumers.

Record rise in gas prices and supply tensions

Natural gas futures for the Dutch TTF, which is the main benchmark for the European market, exceeded the level of 91 euros per megawatt-hour, achieving a notable jump compared to previous closures and recording widespread gains since the escalation of tensions in the Middle East. This rapid rise reflects the ongoing state of anxiety in global energy markets regarding the stability of cargo flows.

Gas inventory challenges and European Union rules

These price pressures come at a time when the European continent is facing challenges related to the level of natural gas inventories in underground facilities. Estimates indicate that storage levels are hovering around 75%, a percentage lower than the European Union's regulatory targets of reaching 90% before the arrival of November. Analysts believe that this limited margin leaves markets exposed to any potential disruptions in global supply chains.

Implications for inflation and industrial electricity prices

These high levels of gas prices place additional pressure on central banks and monetary policymakers, as energy returns to push inflation upward. In countries like Spain, the impact is transmitted directly via the retail electricity market, reaching energy-intensive industrial sectors such as ceramics, chemicals, and food, raising questions about the feasibility of current mechanisms to support consumers and businesses during the winter season.
